Some evidence that the doom merchants were wrong about AI and jobs

Research by the Institute for the Future of Work (IFOW), Imperial College London and Warwick Business School has surveyed more than 1000 UK firms.

It has found that more than 860 confirmed they were using AI and other automated technology, with 78% of those companies reporting this had resulted directly in the creation of new jobs.

It seems that contrary to expectations adoption of AI has led to both net job creation, and more ‘good work’.

According to the report “While 47% of respondents said AI and automation had eliminated positions within their company, almost 67% reported the technology had created new positions.”.

There is one caveat, however, in that there is a chance of greater regional inequalities.

This will depend on how well the regions are doing a\t investing in technology, education and upskilling work forces.

The report urges ““The more you invest in your workforce, the more likely they are to be able to successfully utilise these technologies, because they’ve got more skills.”
